A graduate of Lew Wallace who made good of himself is Bobby Brooks - class year unknown. He was a football standout in high school and recruited to play college ball for Bear Bryant at Alabama, where his team won a national championship. He went on into the NFL as a pro halfback, but there wasn’t firm information given on why or when he ended his pro career.

Mr. Christoff says that on his first day reporting in at the school, he saw a familiar-looking man standing on the front step and started over to speak with him. Turned out Mr. Brooks remembered Mr. Christoff from the school system as well, and they happily greeted one another. Puzzled, Mr. Christoff inquired as to the reason for Mr. Brooks’ presence on campus that day. “I’m one of the new custodians,” he replied. Scrambling not to show shock on his face, Mr. Christoff welcomed Mr. Brooks to the staff and said he made a point of addressing him, as he did all the custodial and maintenance staff, as “Mr. Brooks,” for the entire time of his employment at the school. He said it’s all about giving people dignity.
